The pitch for Meta Manus is simple: you describe what you want done, and the AI does it — not by generating text you then act on, but by actually operating your computer. Opening files, running terminal commands, filling out forms, writing and executing code. A computer-use AI agent on your desktop.

I spent two weeks testing the desktop app. Here's what actually works.

Meta Manus moves AI assistance from "generates text" to "takes actions." The difference in workflow is significant.

What Meta Manus Actually Does

Meta Manus is an AI agent framework that can control desktop applications through computer vision and OS-level APIs. The desktop app installs a local agent that:

  • Reads your screen (with permission)
  • Controls keyboard and mouse inputs
  • Executes terminal commands
  • Opens, reads, and writes files
  • Interacts with web browsers

This puts it in the same category as Anthropic's computer use demo and the OpenAI Operator — but as a consumer desktop app rather than an API.

Setup took about 15 minutes: install the app, grant screen recording and accessibility permissions, connect your Meta account. The permissions prompt is appropriately alarming — you're granting an AI agent control over your computer. Read them carefully before proceeding.

Three Things I Actually Used It For

Task 1: Repository audit and report generation

I asked Manus to analyze a Node.js project I was working on and produce a report covering: outdated dependencies, unused imports, and files with no test coverage.

The workflow it executed:

  1. Opened the terminal
  2. Ran npm audit and saved the output
  3. Ran a custom script to find unused imports (it wrote the script)
  4. Checked which source files had corresponding test files
  5. Compiled everything into a markdown report

This took about 4 minutes and produced a genuinely useful report. The alternative would have been 30-45 minutes of manual work. This is the category where Manus delivers clear value: well-defined, multi-step tasks that involve running commands and aggregating results.

Task 2: Setting up a new development environment

I gave it a new MacBook and asked it to set up my development environment: install homebrew, configure git, install specific versions of Node and Python, clone my dotfiles and apply them.

This worked surprisingly well for most steps. Where it struggled: handling interactive prompts (sudo password requests, license agreements with unusual formatting). It got stuck twice and needed me to intervene. Not a failure — the task legitimately requires human judgment at those moments — but worth knowing.

Task 3: Debugging an intermittent test failure

I asked it to investigate a test that was failing roughly 30% of the time. This was the hardest task and the most revealing.

Manus ran the test 20 times, collected the failures, analyzed the stack traces, searched the codebase for race condition patterns, and produced a hypothesis. The hypothesis was partially correct — it identified the right area of the code but misattributed the root cause.

Here's what I learned: Manus is good at the investigative process and weak on the interpretive step. Running tests, collecting data, searching code — it handles these well. Understanding why something is failing at a deeper level still requires human judgment.

The Honest Limitations

It breaks on anything non-standard. If an application behaves differently than expected — unusual dialog boxes, non-standard UI patterns, apps that don't follow OS conventions — Manus gets confused. It's trained on common application patterns; edge cases cause problems.

Long tasks drift. Tasks over roughly 20 steps tend to accumulate small errors that compound. By step 25 it might have misremembered an earlier decision or made a small wrong turn that wasn't corrected. For long tasks, check in at natural milestones rather than walking away entirely.

Permission anxiety is real. You need to be comfortable with an AI agent having screen recording and accessibility access. If you work with sensitive information, think carefully about what Manus will see while it's running. It's not storing your screen — but it is reading it.

Speed isn't comparable to doing it yourself. For tasks you know how to do quickly, Manus is slower. The value is for tasks that are tedious, require keeping multiple things in mind simultaneously, or where you'd rather delegate than execute.

Manus's consumer-app accessibility is its main differentiator. Claude's computer use is more capable but requires developer integration. Operator is easier to use but more restricted in what it can access.

Who Should Use This

Manus is a genuine productivity tool for developers and technical users who have recurring multi-step tasks that don't require constant judgment. The time savings on well-defined tasks are real.

It's not ready to replace a developer for anything requiring creative problem-solving or deep contextual understanding of a specific codebase. Think of it as a capable executor for mechanical tasks, not a collaborator on hard problems.

One practical tip that isn't in any documentation: before starting a complex task, spend 2-3 minutes writing out the steps you'd take yourself, then give that plan to Manus along with the task description. Telling it "here's how I'd approach this" dramatically reduces the chance of it going in an unexpected direction.

The Bigger Shift

What computer-use AI represents is a change in the unit of AI assistance from "text generation" to "task completion." The difference matters: text generation gives you something to act on, task completion acts for you. Both are useful; they're useful in different situations.

For developers: the interesting question isn't whether Manus can do your job (it can't, yet) — it's what parts of your job you'd like to hand off to something that will execute them reliably while you focus elsewhere. That's a more tractable question, and for a lot of mechanical development tasks, the answer is clearer than it might seem.
